The park has the distinction of being the oldest national park in America, east of the Mississippi River. The fascinating, rugged terrain will keep you mesmerized. Situated along the coast of the Atlantic, the landscape of the park is dotted with woodland, granite peaks, and rocky beaches. It is the highest point on the east coast of the US. Do carry binoculars to spot moose, seabirds, and whales. After a tiring day exploring the national park, head to Bar Harbor to feast on lobsters, fresh bread, and mussels that are often served with crunchy coleslaw.
Put on a comfortable pair of walking shoes and hike for 1.2 miles through Camden Hills State Park to reach the top of Mount Battie. This nature trail is uphill, but you will not find it that difficult. The foliage of the trees provides shade during the hike. Alternatively, you can drive up to the summit. The one-hour hike is worthwhile once you see the impressive views of Camden Hills, Penobscot, and the quaint town of Camden, where you can visit galleries and shops or enjoy a leisurely walk along the harbor.
Prince Edward Island is renowned for winery and lighthouses. Visit Rossignol Estate Winery, which is an award-winning winery, to taste wine with delicious, smooth cheese. After the wine tasting head to Point Prim Lighthouse and Wood Island Lighthouse to learn their history and get mesmerized by the rugged and stark beauty that you can see from the watchtowers.
No trip to Canada and New England is complete without a visit to the Bay of Fundy. It is a paradise for whale watchers. You can easily get onto a catamaran to go on a whale excursion and spy finback, minke, and humpback whales. Seeing these marine creatures in their natural habitat is spellbinding, but do ensure that you also take time to admire eagles, porpoise, and seals.
If you are nature lover, take an excursion to the biggest migratory bird sanctuary in North America. It is located in Gaspe, in Quebec. Here, you will be able to see 200,000 gannets, which come here to breed and nest. It is fascinating to see these seabirds fly high, over cliffs. Carry a camera with a zoom lens to click stunning photographs of the birds. You can even take a short boat ride to Bonaventure, where you will be able to take in the sight of the Perce Rock, a natural arch, which is one of the biggest in the world.
Head to Newport to check out the rocky cliffs, facing the Atlantic. The cliffs stretch for 3.5 miles and create an awe-inspiring vista, with sprawling mansions on one side and the ocean the other side. The northern side of the trail is paved and hence, right for strollers and wheelchairs. The rest of the trail is rocky, narrow, and challenging. Wear comfortable walking shoes to traverse the trail and do not forget a warm jacket to ward off the icy breeze.
