Basseterre is the capital of St. Kitts and the perfect town to enjoy a stroll. Your cruise ship will dock at Port Zante, from where you can pass through the Old Treasure archway and head to the Circus Roundabout. Be sure to check out the Berkeley Memorial Clock. If you are looking to try out the local cuisine, head to Fort and Bank streets, where you will find food vendors selling just about everything. At Independence Square, visit Gallery Café, where you can enjoy your brew and admire works by local artists.
St. Kitts is renowned for many historic structures that date back to the colonial era. Brimstone Hill Fortress is one of the best-preserved forts in the Caribbean and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was constructed in the 17th century by the British and is located on top a hill that is 800 feet high. From the fort, you get amazing views of the island and pristine beaches.
St. Kitts used to have a thriving sugar industry and Wingfield Estate is where you will be able to discern some of the histories of this industry. There is a disused aqueduct that used to transport water from Liamuiga Mountain to the windmill. There is even a rum distillery here and plans are afoot to get the distillery up and running. Entry to Wingfield Estate is free.
If you truly want to admire the lush beauty of St. Kitts, head out for a memorable train ride. The vibrantly colored train follows the same route that was used when the sugar industry was thriving on the island. It was used to transport sugarcane to the different sugar mills from 1912 to 1926. The ride takes about three hours and covers 30 miles of the north-eastern coastline. You will be able to get amazing views of the rainforests, ocean, volcanoes, and soaring cliffs.
Your cruise to St. Kitts will be incomplete if you don’t go exploring the lush rainforest. Located on the slopes of Liamuiga Mountain, the rainforest is teeming with flora and fauna. When you make it to the top of the mountain, you will be greeted by amazing views of the ocean and St. Kitts, making the challenging hike worthwhile.
Most cruise ships drop anchor on the south side of St. Kitts, where the best beaches are situated. The pristine golden sand, the gentle cool breeze, and the turquoise water will keep you busy during your sojourn in St. Kitts. Some of the most popular beaches are Majors Bay Beach, Cockleshell Beach, and Sand Bank Bay. The locals visit the Cockleshell Beach while the Sand Bank Bay is the least crowded.
These are some of the things that you can enjoy during your cruise to St. Kitts and make the most of the lush and gorgeous archipelago in the Caribbean.
