On the northern coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil, the city is situated where the Itajaí-Açu River meets the sea and is connected to the main highways and airports in the country. Portuguese and German colonists founded the town in the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively, and navigation has been a major part of its history. It is also home to the largest port complex in the country. Itajaí is the second largest port in Brazil for container cargo handling, as well as for frozen meat exports. Itajaí has steadily expanded in recent years because of new markets like oil, gas, and nautical.

Highlights of Itajai

Beaches, rustic villages, coastal sports, and extreme sports can all be found in the region, coastlines, and countryside. There is much to see in the countryside, rainforest, nature, ecotourism, and nightlife. Itajai is an excellent place for leisure and entertainment. Anyone looking for it should walk around the whole region and discover its charms.

1. Public Market from Itajaí

In 1916, the Itajai Public Market was built by merchants, farmers, and fishermen, a unique and imposing architecture influenced by German immigrants. Dry and wet goods were sold there since the store opened on January 1, 1917. The exterior of the building was modified after a fire in 1936 when pediments were removed, and the art-deco style was adopted. Carnival, Music and Theater Festivals, and popular traditions are held here today. You can savor snacks and typical dishes made from local handicrafts in its inner courtyard. After work, this is an ideal place to socialize with friends and have happy hours. The organization organizes musical performances and cultural meetings.

2. Cycling Tourism

Typically on secondary roads and inland paths, cycling tourism is not only a means of transport but also a means of companionship. 270 km long, the circuit offers excellent cultural and landscape diversity by merging coast and interior. In addition to passing through great tourist spots and scenic locations of unparalleled beauty, the route also passes through national historic sites.

Interesting Spots to Visit in Itajai

Itajaí has endless natural beauty with its beaches, parks, and everything they can offer. Hills of lush subtropical vegetation surround its beautiful beaches. There is a city called Itajai in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Several popular attractions await you there, including Bico do Papagaio and Morro da Cruz.

1. Nozzle of Parrot

Located at the exit of Atalaia beach toward Cabeçudas beach, the Bico do Papagaio is one of the city's most famous postcards, resembling a bird. One can enjoy the sea and register the moment through the viewpoint. There are three ways to get to Bico do Papagaio: by car, bicycle, or on foot. Due to the paved and illuminated bike path that circles the area, there is an excellent urban structure for exercising and enjoying the scenery.

2. Zoo Pomerode

Explore Zoo Pomerode, Brazil's first zoo. A large zoo area, about 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres), has been set aside for possible future expansion. This relatively small zoo has more than 1,100 animals, representing more than 220 different species. The zoo focuses on the conservation and reproduction of species at risk of extinction in the wild, so many of the animals are housed there. Since 2002, they have been educating children about the environment through their environmental education program. Check out the entertaining monkeys and birds, some of whom fly overhead. Parking, a cafeteria, a shop, a visitor center, and an environmental education center are part of the zoo.

3. Morro da Cruz

Despite not being the highest point on Santa Catarina, Morro da Cruz (Hill of the Cross) provides a panoramic view of almost the entire island at 285 m (935 ft). There is a view of the two bays from the platform by the cross named for the hill. You can also see the bridges Hercíílio Luz, Colombo Salles, and Pedro Ivo Campos, as well as Trindade, a neighborhood on the east coast of Florianópolis.

4. Brava Beach

There's no better place than Brava Beach to sit back and relax, but you should also take advantage of the calm moments to swim in the crystal clear water. A balance has been struck between preserving and developing the beach's natural beauty. The result is that a limited number of restaurants and bars are of good quality.

5. The Viewpoint of Cross Hill

Several parts of the urban area are visible from the top of Morro da Cruz, where one can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of practically the entire city, with views of commercial and tourist vessels entering the Port of Itajaí and Navegantes (neighboring city). The beaches are also beautiful. There's nothing better than a city skyline. The contrast between the buildings and the sea and the contours of the Morro is visible from the top.

When to Visit Itajai?

Itajai is a great place to visit from January until December when the weather is pleasant or warm, and rainfall is minimal.
