NCL sets zero-emissions targets

By Cruise Booking Team

A press release states that Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has updated its climate action strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

As part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ ambitious goal of becoming net zero by 2050, Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer-elect said, “We are proud to refine and strengthen our climate action strategy and commitments, including setting milestone targets for GHG intensity reductions.”

Our Board of Directors has established shared accountability and tied incentives to this critical effort for every aspect of our business, from shoreside to shipboard. Every part of our business is responsible for developing, delivering, and demonstrating decarbonization results. Additionally, we recently announced that two of our future Prima Class newbuilds would be modified to accommodate green methanol to be used.”

By 2026 and 2030, the new targets aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Fuel and energy-related activities and emissions from the Company’s fleet islands and facilities contribute to these emissions. By 2050, NCLH aims to achieve net zero by establishing new targets.

As part of this transformational journey, we are also activating and mobilizing our entire network of team members, ports and destinations, suppliers and partners, and guests to act now and join us,” Sommer said.

Efficiency, innovation, and collaboration are the three pillars of the new climate action strategy. In addition to upgrading its HVAC system and using waste heat recovery systems, the Company is investing in systems and technologies designed to maximize efficiency. Moreover, NCLH is also researching long-term solutions, such as technologies that will facilitate the use of green fuels.
A blend of about 30 percent biofuel and 70 percent marine gas has already been tested on several ships by the Company. Furthermore, NCLH has announced that Prima ships five and six will be equipped with methanol to reduce emissions and CO2 emissions by as much as 95 percent.

Stakeholder collaboration will be essential to achieving net zero for the Company.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. vice president of ESG, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications Jessica John said, “We are encouraged to see significant progress and momentum across sectors in decarbonizing, but fundamental challenges remain for the cruise industry to decarbonize by 2050.”

We have adopted a strategy of acting now rather than waiting to see if these challenges will disappear. “We are developing efficiency solutions today, innovative solutions for the future, and collaborating with our stakeholders. Our climate action efforts and building our Company’s resilience are based on good governance and effective risk management.”
