This weekend, during MSC Euribia’s maiden call to the port of Kiel, the shore power facility at the Ostuferhafen Terminal was officially inaugurated by MSC Cruises and the port of Kiel.
MSC Euribia’s Captain Christopher Pugh and senior cruise line representatives attended the ceremony with Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther and Lord Mayor Ulf Kampf.
By summer 2024, MSC Cruises will have 20 stops in Kiel during its summer cruises as it will plug into Kiel’s local power grid for electricity that will power hotels while berthed and reduce emissions.
During the northern European winter of 2023-24, MSC Euribia will also use the shore power facility at Hamburg.
A significant step forward in our decarbonization journey has been achieved with the inauguration of shoreside power at Kiel’s Ostuferhafen terminal, according to Linden Coppell, MSC Cruises’ VP Sustainability and ESG. MSC Cruises will be able to access the electricity grids in Europe by adding 15 new ports between 2024 and 2026 that have shore-power facilities. We remain committed to, and making progress toward, decarbonization, as well as reducing emissions from our ships while berthed in ports.
