The first major cruise line to be awarded the Green Marine Europe Certification is MSC Cruises.
Among the eight performance indicators, the cruise line received the highest score representing “environmental excellence and leadership”, according to the organizers.
Aquatic invasive species, pollutant air emissions, nitrogen dioxide pollutant air emissions, greenhouse gas emissions, oil discharge, waste management, underwater radiated noise, and responsible ship recycling were some of the measures measured.
At a ceremony in Bilbao, Spain, MSC Cruises‘ vice president of environmental operations and compliance, Captain Minas Myrtidis, collected the award on behalf of the company.
In all of the criteria, we were given the highest possible rating, and we are extremely proud of that. MSC Cruises is delighted to receive the Green Marine Europe certificate, which is a testament to the efforts of all members of our company, both onboard and ashore, that help us achieve our sustainability goals. Myrtidis noted that the certification highlights his company’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and performance improvement.
Explora Journeys and MSC Cruises have committed to measuring their environmental performance annually and to submitting them for external verification to Green Marine Europe.
