Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilder, announced it had signed a deal with Viking to build two new cruise ships. These ships will follow the same design as the previous vessels Fincantieri had already built for Vikings.
The two ships are scheduled to be ready by 2030. Each will weigh 54,300 tons and carry up to 998 passengers.
In addition, Fincantieri and Viking have agreed to an option for four more ships, with deliveries planned for 2031 and 2032.
Pierroberto Folgiero, the CEO of Fincantieri, said, “This new order strengthens our partnership with Viking and shows our commitment to leading the way in shipbuilding innovation. It also guarantees steady work for our shipyards for years to come, helping us stay at the forefront of the industry’s shift toward more sustainable practices. By using the latest technologies, we are building ships that meet both today’s environmental standards and future challenges.”
The long-standing partnership between Fincantieri and Viking goes back to 2012. Together, they have built 22 ships, including two special expedition vessels from Vard, a Norwegian subsidiary of Fincantieri.
Viking’s new 998-passenger ships will be the same size and style as their current small-ship fleet. Fincantieri confirmed that these new vessels would meet the latest environmental and navigation rules.
Though the deal’s value was not disclosed, it was described as “significant.” If the option is confirmed, the additional ships will join the fleet in 2031 and 2032.
This new agreement builds on Viking and Fincantieri’s successful partnership. It ensures they stay on track with their focus on sustainability and innovative shipbuilding.
