Silversea, a luxury expedition travel brand, has announced the name and key details of its new 150-room hotel, The Cormorant at 55 South, located in Puerto Williams, Chile. Set to open during the 2025-2026 Antarctica season, this property will be the southernmost hotel on Earth, serving as a gateway for Antarctic expeditions.
The Cormorant at 55 South is a tribute to the rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty and storied history of Puerto Williams, immersing guests in their destination before embarking on their journey to Antarctica,” said Bert Hernandez, president of Silversea.
He further added: “Every aspect of The Cormorant is thoughtfully designed with our guests in mind, ensuring a comfortable and uniquely Silversea experience. Each room offers panoramic views of Patagonia, and the hotel creates a deep connection to the local community, providing specially designed experiences that will allow our guests to begin their expeditions sooner than ever, all in uncompromised comfort.”
The hotel’s name reflects its unique position at 55° South latitude and honors the indigenous Yahgan word Lakutaia, meaning cormorant. This seafaring bird, symbolizing good fortune, is a fitting emblem for guests embarking on their Antarctic adventures.
The Cormorant at 55 South will offer rooms with two distinct views: lush forest landscapes or serene vistas of the Beagle Channel. Each room is designed with warm wood tones, earthy elements, and handcrafted decor from local artisans, blending luxury with regional authenticity.
In addition to the hotel announcement, Silversea introduced Stories by Silversea, a new content series focused on authentic storytelling. The first two episodes, titled “Embrace the Unknown” and “A Legacy in the Making: Part 1,” were released today. The series will explore unique Silversea experiences, including a multi-part feature on the development of The Cormorant at 55 South, offering behind-the-scenes insights and resources.
