A special tour of the Carnival Breeze and an education about cruise industry career opportunities was offered recently to students from the Maritime Careers Summer Camp.
The students were addressed by the Carnival Breeze Captain Gaspare Marzullo, Gina Spagnola, President and CEO of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and Rodger Rees, Director and CEO of Galveston Wharves Port. Besides participating in a trivia game, they also had lunch and received giveaways.
“We are so proud to have operated in Galveston for 23 years and are honored to be able to support local youth through initiatives like this special ship tour,” said Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line president. Our commitment to Galveston will only grow as Carnival expands its operations and launches its newest ship later this year.”
Students in eighth and tenth grades interested in maritime careers have the opportunity to attend the Maritime Careers Summer Camp. Besides visiting the Carnival Breeze and Galveston Wharves, the camp also offers tours of the cargo port, naval ships, active military training facilities, and the design and construction of autonomous underwater vehicles.
Besides being an economic engine for our community, the Port of Galveston generates many jobs. In addition to the fourth most popular cruise port in the U.S., the top cargo port in the U.S. is just yards away. Educating them about the many employment opportunities in the maritime industry was a pleasure.
As Spagnola explained, the Chamber hopes to inspire the next generation of Galveston maritime professionals through this summer camp. Our local students will benefit greatly from Carnival’s participation in this year’s camp, so we are so grateful that they will participate.
