Carnival Reveals Bahama-Inspired Lokono Cove on Celebration Key

By Cruise Booking Team

Carnival Cruise Line has presented Lokono Cove as the name for the new retail hub within its Grand Bahama destination, Celebration Key, thanks to input from a local resident.

The name Lokono Cove was selected through a local contest endorsed by the Ministry for Grand Bahama and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, with Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy announcing the decision on Tuesday, April 9.

“Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove – a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of The Bahamas and find locally-inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones, or cherish for themselves for years to come,” Duffy explained. She also added that the endeavor is deeply rooted in celebrating Bahamian heritage and will be evident across Lokono Cove. She stressed on the local aspect and rootedness of the cove, based on the fact that the name stems from the community of Grand Bahama, making it a place that truly represents the island.

As one of Celebration Key’s five distinct areas, Lokono Cove will present an array of shopping options ranging from quaint kiosks to high-end boutiques, all highlighting the artistry of local artisans. Visitors can look forward to picking up everything from unique souvenirs to luxurious jewelry, enjoying local treats, and viewing art pieces created by Bahamian artists.

The name Lokono Cove, meaning “the people” and reflects the heritage of the Lucayans, the early settlers of Grand Bahama. The name was proposed by Deidre Rahming. This selection came as the culmination of a competition involving local residents of Grand Bahama, with the process overseen by a committee including local officials.

For her winning contribution, Rahming will receive a prize of B$5,000, an invitation to the Lokono Cove ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a day pass to Celebration Key, recognizing her significant impact on the project.

Duffy reiterated, “Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove – a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of The Bahamas and find locally-inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones, or cherish for themselves for years to come. Honoring the beauty and culture of the Bahamas is integral to our plans for Celebration Key, and that will be on display throughout Lokono Cove. It’s a special honor that locals from Grand Bahama have contributed already in an impactful way, giving this portal its name.”
