Holland America to Host Astronomy Experts on 2024 Solar Eclipse Cruises

Aboard the Koningsdam and Zaandam, Holland America Line will host astronomy experts to help guests see the eclipse to the fullest extent possible in 2024.

At the solar eclipse viewing on April 8, 2024, University of California San Diego Professor Adam Burgasser will be aboard the Koningsdam. His lectures, which will be held on the ship’s World Stage, will help guests understand this rare occurrence and safely observe it. Burgasser is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics.

Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment at Holland America Line, said that the ships will be positioned to allow guests to view the eclipse. As this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, receiving guidance from a renowned physicist such as Dr. Burgasser is an exciting experience for our guests. This will be an unforgettable live event because we’re known for our immersive programming.”

There’s no better or unique place to see this total solar eclipse than at sea off the coast of Mexico, Burgasser said. “This is the first total solar eclipse in North America in seven years, and astronomers — amateurs and professionals — are all eager to see it.” On Koningsdam, I am looking forward to witnessing this phenomenon and educating guests on its science and history.”

In April, the Koningsdam will embark upon a 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise; the cruise from San Diego, California, to Vancouver, Canada, departs on April 5 and heads to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, prior to viewing the solar eclipse on April 8. Before crossing to Hawaii, the Koningsdam will make a stop in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

During the 14-day journey from San Diego to Mazatlán, Mexico, the Zaandam will carry out lectures and demonstrations by guest presenter Jim McParland.
