TotalEnergies Marine Fuels and MSC Cruises at the Port of Marseille Fos successfully completed the first LNG bunkering operation for the MSC World Europa.
“We are pleased to welcome MSC World Europa for her first summer season in the Mediterranean with the first LNG bunkering operation in Marseille,” said Patrick Pourbaix, Managing Director of MSC Cruises in France. MSC World Europa represents a significant step forward on our journey towards net-zero emissions by 2050 by featuring a range of unprecedented environmental and marine technologies. As we look ahead to using synthetic LNG or other non-carbon fuels once they become available at scale, LNG is not only the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale, but also a transitional fuel.”
MSC World Europa was refueled with 2 500 m3 of LNG by TotalEnergies’ chartered LNG bunker barge, the Gas Vitality, on April 22. In March 2021, TotalEnergies and MSC Group announced an LNG bunker supply contract between the two companies. As a result of the agreement, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels will provide MSC Cruises with about 45,000 tons of LNG per year.
As a local LNG bunker hub in the Mediterranean region, TotalEnergies is pleased to support the Cruise Division of MSC Group’s decarbonization journey.
Besides expanding our LNG bunkering capabilities to the cruise ship segment, this operation demonstrates our ability to serve a broader range of shipping clients as the industry strives to reduce emissions. “To meet TotalEnergies’ Climate ambition, we will work with our industry partners on developing and scaling up new, lower-carbon, and ultimately zero-carbon fuel solutions for shipping.”
