MSC Meraviglia Makes Unprecedented Winter Visit to Saint John

On December 21, Saint John played host to the MSC Meraviglia along with its complement of 2,880 guests, an unexpected visit as the ship had been redirected north due to adverse weather conditions. The decision to change its course was made just six days before the ship’s arrival, prompting quick action by port officials.

Natalie Allaby, the director of cruise excellence for Cruise Saint John, expressed enthusiasm about the unique occasion. She remarked, “Our team had so much fun this past week preparing for a cruise ship arrival on the first official day of winter – it was certainly a Port Saint John and Atlantic Canada first.” She noted that it was the latest in the season that the port had ever accommodated a cruise ship.

In response to the unexpected arrival, the port swiftly organized festive activities within the terminal to warmly welcome both passengers and crew. These included a hot chocolate station, the sampling of New Brunswick products, a local high school choir performing from the rooftop upon the ship’s arrival, and a surprise appearance by Santa Claus.

Despite the chilly temperatures, passengers were in high spirits. Allaby observed, “The passengers I spoke with were all in good spirits despite the very chilly temperature today. It wasn’t the warm destination they originally planned for, but I think our warm hospitality was certainly appreciated.”

During the ship’s visit, temperatures reached a peak of 28°F, a significant improvement from the low of 15°F earlier in the day. Notably, guests were given the option to forgo the cruise and instead receive a refund and future credit.
