Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady has embarked on its Aussie MerMaiden voyage, kicking off from Melbourne as announced in a press release.
The adults-only cruise ship set sail from its local homeport on December 11th, departing on a five-day journey through the Bass Strait en route to Tasmania. Passengers enjoyed an overnight stop in Hobart before continuing their voyage to Burnie.
Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group Founder, bid farewell to passengers with a festive Champagne toast at a sail-away party held on the upper pool deck of the ship. Speaking about the day, Branson expressed his delight, stating, “It was great to be in Melbourne, a vibrant city that matches the vibe of Virgin Voyages.”
He further added, “Australia has always held a special place in my heart and I’m so thankful for the warm welcome Australia has provided us. We are so excited to show you Resilient Lady and we’re determined to make waves Down Under with this new way of cruising.”
Ahead of the toast, Sir Richard Branson engaged in a full-day itinerary aboard Resilient Lady. He hosted a press conference on the ship’s pool deck, discussing Virgin Voyages’ long-term plans for Australia and the South Pacific, emphasizing the cruise line’s excitement for its new chapter in Australian waters.
During his visit to Resilient Lady’s restaurant, The Test Kitchen, Sir Richard Branson showcased his culinary skills alongside entertainer and former My Kitchen Rules contestant, Jake Harrison. A playful food fight ensued as Branson mischievously joined in while Harrison was finishing his Aussie lamington.
The Aussie MerMaiden voyage marks the first of 17 voyages in the region for Virgin Voyages. This inaugural season includes routes through Tasmania, New Zealand’s Fjords, and Australia’s southern coast, featuring voyages ranging from two to 14 nights.
Virgin Voyages has already announced its return to Australia and New Zealand in December 2024, featuring Resilient Lady and adding nine new ports of call for its second season in the region.
