Water Conservation & Management
Water Production Onboard
Water is essential for various uses on board, such as amenities in guest and crew staterooms, kitchens, laundry facilities, pools, whirlpools, spas, and cleaning public areas.
There are initiatives to increase water production onboard by using advanced desalination plants that convert seawater. This approach minimizes the reliance on port-sourced freshwater, particularly in areas where it is in limited supply.
Water Production Methods
Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology converts seawater into fresh and technical water using high-pressure pumps, sophisticated filters, and treatment systems.
Evaporators create fresh water from seawater by harnessing heat from sources like Exhaust Gas Boilers, Oil-Fired Boilers, or Waste Heat from the main engine's cooling system.
Bunkered Water, collected in port, is utilized as drinking water onboard.
Wastewater Treatment Systems
Norwegian Cruise Line's vessels are equipped with Advanced Wastewater Purification systems (AWPs) to process wastewater onboard, ensuring the treated water complies with or surpasses both international and local standards.
The newest ships feature top-tier AWP technology that adheres to rigorous Baltic Standards. Compliance is ensured through regular third-party quarterly and weekly checks by environmental officers.
Bilge Water Management
Wastewater from machinery and engine spaces, referred to as bilge water, is stored onboard and only discharged after it meets all relevant international, national, and corporate guidelines.
Devices that automatically stop the process and oil content meters monitor and record the oil content in bilge water. If the water does not meet the standards, discharge is prevented, and it is treated again. The remaining bilge water is then responsibly disposed of ashore by an approved vendor.
Ballast Water Treatment
Ballasting operations, which involve filling tanks with ocean water, help stabilize ships to ensure safety and comfort. This process also maintains the ship's trim, stability, and structural integrity.
Before discharging, ballast water is treated to remove microorganisms acquired during transit, protecting local habitats and preventing the spread of non-native or invasive species.
Waste Mitigation
Norwegian ships operate globally in sensitive regions, exemplifying leadership in environmental stewardship.
A strict no-tolerance policy prohibits disposing of items overboard, and all personnel, including guests and employees, are encouraged to report environmental issues via an environmental hotline.
A forward-thinking waste management program has been implemented to diminish environmental impacts, pollution, and landfill use while also conserving resources and energy and reducing fuel consumption.
Waste reduction targets are met through recycling and reusing, with specific goals established for minimizing waste.
Over the last ten years, Norwegian has expanded its recycling efforts and collaborations, including a 2010 partnership with Waste Management that streamlined the waste offload process, reducing time, costs, and congestion at ports and minimizing the use of pier-side containers.
Shore and shipboard employees participate in community and environmental initiatives such as food and clothing drives and beach and community clean-ups.
During ship refurbishments, options for recycling and donating technical equipment and hotel furniture are considered.
